IVELAW GRIFFITH
Dean of the Honor’s College and Professor of Political Science
Florida International University



Ivelaw L. Griffith is Dean of The Honors College and Professor of Political Science at Florida International University (FIU). A specialist on Caribbean and Inter-American security and narcotics issues, he has published six books, most recently Drugs and Security in the Caribbean: Sovereignty Under Siege (Penn State University Press, 1997) and The Political Economy of Drugs in the Caribbean (Macmillan of London, 2000). He currently is working on Caribbean Security in the Age of Terror.

Dean Griffith also has written articles in several scholarly journals, including Journal of Inter American Studies & World Affairs, Dickinson Journal of International Law, Caribbean Affairs, Journal of Commonwealth & Comparative Politics, Caribbean Studies, University of Miami Law Review, International Journal, Mershon International Studies Review, Caribbean Perspectives, Hemisphere, Latin American Research Review, CARICOM Perspective, Caribbean Quarterly, Naval War College Review, The Round Table, International Journal, Third World Quarterly, Low Intensity Conflict & Law Enforcement and Joint Force Quarterly. His most recent article is the North-South Center Agenda Paper Number 65, published - September 2003.

The Royal Military College of Canada and the George Marshall European Center for Security Studies in Germany are among places Dr. Griffith has been a Visiting Scholar, and he has been a consultant to Canada’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Trade, the Organization of American States, USAID, and other bodies. He has lectured at the U.S. Institute for National Strategic Studies, the Center for Hemispheric Defense Studies, and the Inter-American Defense College, all in Washington, DC, the U.S. Air Force School of Special Operations and the U. S. Coast Guard in Florida, the Western Hemisphere Institute for Security Cooperation in Georgia, and at police and military agencies in the Caribbean.

The MacArthur Foundation, the University of Miami’s North-South Center, and FIU have funded his research, and he is a recipient of FIU’s Award for Excellence in Research. Professor Griffith serves on the editorial board of Security and Defense Studies Review, published by the Center for Hemispheric Defense Studies at the National Defense University, in Washington, DC, and Caribbean Journal of Criminology and Social Psychology, published by the Center for Criminology and Criminal Justice at the University of the West Indies, Trinidad. He has served on the Executive Council of the International Studies Association-South, and is a Past President of the Caribbean Studies Association, comprising over 1,000 scholars in Asia, the Americas, and Europe. Within FIU Dean Griffith is a member of the President’s Council, the Council of Deans, and the Academic Planning Council. He also is Executive Editor of Diversity Exchange Magazine.
